Jessica

Hello Future Leaders!

My name is Jessica and I recently graduated from Linfield College with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) this past May. I did my prerequisites at Oregon State University (OSU) for three years and then transferred to Linfield my last two years of study. I was involved in the College Assistant Migrant Program (CAMP) during my freshman year at OSU and still remain in contact with a majority of the friends I made that first year.

As a graduate and soon to be a registered nurse, my goal is to help the Latino community navigate through the healthcare system. It is incredibly frustrating to see patients with sick loved ones who cannot convey their needs for pain medication, extra blankets, or a hot meal simply because they are unable to communicate in English. Even more disheartening is seeing the way that our community is sometimes discriminated, judged, and treated by the predominant culture within the hospital. My goal is to make even one patient’s time within the hospital an enjoyable experience by treating them with dignity, catering to their cultural needs, and educating them on their particular illness.

It’s incredibly exciting to be part of the OMLI for a second time around because I LOVE seeing students realize their own potential. There is nothing more thrilling than seeing a student have a dream for themselves, making a goal, plan a method of attack and then actually come to achieve that dream. Not doing things because your parents tell you, or your boyfriend/girlfriend say to, or even because your friends encourage you, but doing it for yourself. I love a strong woman/man who pursues something like a college education even when everyone around them tells them it’s a bad idea. Go to college. Get out of your hometown, develop yourself as your own individual person, make lifetime friends, travel to a foreign country, make a better life for yourself and your family, and get educated. I can’t wait to meet all of you so we can start making some of these “dreams, realities.‘’

PS: One interesting fact about me is that I was homeless at one point in my life and lived in a homeless shelter for a year. Tight, I know.
